Duckworth Lewis heads Postponed quinella

4th Nov 2011

Duckworth Lewis (NZ) (Postponed) headed a stakes quinella for his Westbury Stud-based sire in the Group Three Te Hana Sparkling Stakes (2000m) at Ellerslie on Melbourne Cup Tuesday.

In the hands of apprentice jockey Alysha Collett Duckworth Lewis (NZ) was given the run of the race following the leader Appelton’s Lass (NZ) (Woodbury Lad) to the 450metre mark, where he shot clear to win by one-and-a-quarter lengths over Postman’s Daughter (NZ) with Dawn Ghost (NZ) (Pyrus) taking the third prize.

Relishing the light weight and the falling rain the Leo Molloy-trained three-year-old stole the thunder of his older rivals including Group One winner Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) who finished fifth.

The Greg Jones and Andrew Green raced gelding was a well performed juvenile placing in the Listed Champagne Stakes, and brought good form into Tuesday’s race with a third in the Wellington Guineas last start.

Bred by Jones Duckworth Lewis (NZ) is by Postponed (Summer Squall) from the winning Groom Dancer (Blushing Groom) mare Ms Magenta (NZ).

The quinella topped of good week for the sire whose son Mr O’Ceirin (NZ) won his third race in succession at Morphettville on Friday.
